General Guestions

Check Outside is located at 691 County Road 233, Unit B1B Durango, CO 81301. We are conveniently located between Durango, Bayfield and the La Plata County Airport. Our rental shop and warehouse are located in Elk Park Center in the “Three Springs” Area.

Our hours are generally Monday through Saturday 9:00am – 5:00pm, Sunday 10-4pm. During the summer peak season, 8:30am – 5:30pm 7-days a week. We have an after-hours pick-up and drop-box for rental orders. Go ahead and make a booking online, we will provide our protocol and will accommodate your schedule upon confirmation of your rental order. We HIGHLY recommend making an advance reservation for rental gear to ensure we can serve you as best as possible. But if you forget, or are flying by the seat of your pants, come on by and we will do our best to help. Please note sometimes even during office hours, doors may be locked, as we are often in the warehouse working on gear or delivering rentals to customers. Hold tight and we will be back shortly. You can also give us a call, chances are we’re in the warehouse in the back.

Payment

Yes. A credit card is required for rental of all equipment. All gear rentals and all car rentals require a valid Credit Card. We will not release any rental items without a credit card.

We charge your credit card on the day your order is shipped. This will be between 1-7 days before your scheduled arrival date.

With our Try Before You Buy program if you rent something and you want to keep it, you can buy it. We’ll negotiate a very competitive rate, minus the cost of the rental. Our prices on gear are truly hard to beat and with the quality of gear you receive, you’ll have a hard time not wanting to add it to your collection of gear.

All of our rental camping and outdoor gear items are listed on our website with a weekly rental rate followed by an additional per day rate. We require a 3-day minimum rental on some rental items and a week rental on other’s. We understand this is frustrating for some people. However, please understand that the efforts to maintain our standards of cleanliness and quality takes a lot of effort. It also take a lot to ship a product and we want you to be able to enjoy it.

If you are picking up locally, give us a call and we may be able to accommodate short or long term rentals.

In most cases, a deposit is not required, but for more expensive items, or for occasions when we aren’t able to gather enough information to properly verify an order, and we may ask for a deposit in those circumstances.

Rental Process

We gladly accept all major credit cards like VISA, AMEX, MasterCard, and Discover to name a few.

Yes. You are required to sign a rental agreement during check out. This basically states that you’ll do your best to keep the gear in the same shape it was shipped to you and that you are responsible for lost or damaged items. You will be charged full retail price (minus rental cost), or repair costs if the item is lost or damaged. Here is our Rental Agreement you are required to sign.

We use FedEx, UPS, and USPS. You can choose your shipping type at checkout (depending upon when you need your rental).

We do our absolute best to get your rental to you the day before your rental starts. We highly suggest you reserve your rental well enough in advance to ensure gear is in stock and will arrive on time.

A signature is required on all packages. Unfortunately, we cannot waive this requirement. If you cannot be home to sign for the package, we highly recommend having it shipped to a FedEx Office location or UPS Store.

As long as we have stock we’re happy to extend your rental. Extensions are charged at 90% of first week rates if requested on or before the ship-back date. If you wait until the order is overdue to request an extension, it will be charged at 100% of first week rates.

Please note, this means that it will ALWAYS be cheaper to rent an item for 14 days rather than renting it for 7 days and then extending for another 7 days.

We will email you a reminder the day before the order should ship back, and another reminder if it is a day late. If you took the gear to a staffed shipping drop-off location on time (not a drop box) but there was a delay in shipping, you are not responsible — Just be sure to get a receipt showing the package has been dropped off. If the lens has not been scanned into the proper tracking system by 6 pm on the day it is supposed to ship back, it is late.

Don’t forget to include your name and the order number with the shipment. Once you get it shipped, please forward us the tracking information so we can keep up with its progress.

We’ll charge you our daily rate for the gear for each day the item is late. (Once it’s shipped and we see confirmation, you’re off the hook).

We will charge you our daily rate for each day the item is late. It an item is not returned or you do not contact us about a late return we will consider the item stolen. At this point the full retail cost of the item will be charged to your credit card.
If at any time an extension is turned down and you do not contact us, we will have to turn your account over to collections.

The amount sent to collections is the retail cost of the items, plus our expenses in attempting to collect from you. At that point, if you send the equipment back, you will still owe the fees of the collection agency which are several hundred dollars. We cannot take it back, undo it, stop it or reverse it. Also, we will exhaust all civil and criminal remedies available in pursuing the matter.

Rental Gear Questions.

All of our rental gear is in excellent shape. We take great pride in making sure the gear we rent is of the highest quality. Everything that is returned to us is put through a rigorous testing process to make sure it functions properly and is something we’d use in the field, on a hunt, or during a competition. If it doesn’t pass the test, it won’t be rented.

Please email us or give us a call. If we have two or three requests for an item, we’re likely to add it. Also if you want an item for an extended rental we will almost certainly be able to a accommodate you.

Local Pickup & Delivery

It’s simple. Just select “Local Pick Up” when selecting a shipping during checkout. Please add the time when you expect to pick up your gear to the notes section at checkout so that we can make sure it’s ready for you when you arrive. There is no cost for local pickup.

For local delivery, just select “Local Delivery” when selecting shipping during checkout. Please add the time and address and any other details for delivery in the notes section at checkout. We may also call you to get more info to make sure we get your gear to you on time. There is a marginal cost for local delivery which will be added to your cost in the cart at checkout.

We do offer delivery of rental gear locally in Durango for a small fee and if you need we can negotiate a delivery to Mesa Verde, Purgatory Resort, Mancos, Cortez, Bayfield, Pagosa, Silverton, Ouray & Telluride.
